stillhavnhotel.com was built for people who want the evening to stay their own. Eighty-four rooms, two kitchens, a small spa fed by seawater, and a gaming floor you can walk past for a week without noticing. Nothing here asks for your attention twice.
The idea
In short
A quiet building with one loud room in it, and a door you choose to open.
Most properties of this kind are designed to keep you moving — through a lobby, past a bar, into a hall of machines. We went the other way. The gaming floor at this casino resort sits behind two sets of doors at the north end of the ground level, on its own ventilation and its own acoustics. Guests who come for the water, the sauna and a long dinner never hear it. Guests who come to play know exactly where it is and when it closes.
The building is a converted grain store from 1908, stripped back to brick and fir beams. Ceilings are high, corridors are short, and every room has a window that opens. We kept the freight lift, the loading doors on the quay side, and the habit of turning the lights down after eleven.
There are no screens in the lift, no music in the corridors, and no scent in the air handling. If that sounds like an absence of things, it is meant to. A casino hotel can be a calm place to sleep; it simply has to decide to be one.

Walls thick enough to forget
Party walls were doubled during the conversion and every door is a solid core with a drop seal. The gaming floor, the plant room and the loading bay all sit under the same slab, away from the sleeping floors. Corridor carpet runs wall to wall so nobody hears a suitcase at two in the morning.
Light
Warm, low, and switchable
Nothing in the building is brighter than it needs to be. Public rooms are lit at 2700K and drop again after 22:00. Rooms have three separate circuits — bed, desk, bath — so you can leave the rest dark. No standby lamps, no illuminated logos on the facade.
Pace
Nobody will hurry you
Breakfast runs four and a half hours. Check-out is at noon and later by arrangement, usually without a charge. Staff are trained to greet once and then leave you alone, which is the part of a casino inn most guests say they were missing.

stillhavnhotel.com is run by fifty-one people, most of whom live within a few streets of the door. The kitchen buys from six suppliers along this coast. The spa uses seawater drawn from the channel and warmed on site. The gaming floor is licensed, staffed by trained hosts, and run to fixed hours — never longer, never quietly extended.
If you are comparing this casino resort with somewhere larger, the honest difference is scale. We have no ballroom, no shopping arcade, and no tour groups. What we have is a short walk from the front desk to your bed.

Rooms open twelve months ahead. Quiet season runs from late October to March, when the harbour freezes at the edges and the sauna is the reason most people come. Summer weekends fill first, usually by February.
Tell us what you are here for and we will place you accordingly — the north rooms for sleep, the quay rooms for light, the third floor for anyone travelling with an early flight. Guests who would rather the gaming floor were not mentioned at all can say so on arrival, and it will not be.
